I have been interested in Serial Killers for many years, and
enjoy taking a glimpse into their lives. I spent a long time trying to
understand why serial killers did the things they did, but I never came to any astounding
conclusions. Many serial murderers seem to come from very dysfunctional families,
and have sad childhood's. The unhappiness they experienced in childhood resulted in an
inability to find happiness anywhere. They seem to display ritualistic behaviour and most of them have severe memory disorders and an inability to tell the truth. Many of the serial killers I have read about have histories of chronic drug or alcohol abuse, or their parents have chronic drug and alcohol problems. Many of them have a history of committing assault and extraordinary cruelty to animals. The vast majority have a hyper sexuality and abnormal sexual behaviour. Lone serial killers (killer couples have different rules) fall
into 3 main categories. This category includes those killers who act in response to
voices and alter ego's. Instructions they receive justify and legitimize the act of
murder. This group are the "clean-up" killers. They think they
are responsible for improving the quality of life, and ridding society of what they see as
bad. The missionary usually picks target groups because they are already the object of
societies prejudices. For example, Prostitutes, Homosexuals and Ethnic Minorities. This is a complex category. This group includes the type of killer for whom "pleasures the reward of murder. Within this category there are 4 sub groups. Lust Killers - This is probably the largest section of serial killers. Sexual gratification is their main motivation. Their crimes almost always exhibit a certain element of sadism. Contrary to popular belief, lust killers - or any serial killers for that matter, are not opportunistic. The time and amount of planning that they go through before they commit their crimes is usually associated with very organized personalities. Lust killers tend to go through four phases.
Thrill Killers -The thrill killer is much the same as the lust killer, in so far as pleasure in the act of killing is the primary motive. What distinguishes the Thrill Killer is that even though sexual abuse may take place, sexual gratification is not his main motivation - but rather to experience a high or a buzz through the act of murder. Gain Killers -This group of killers display the apparently rare (among serial killers) motive of financial or personal gain. For this type of killer the murder is often incidental and a troublesome event that moves them closer to their goal. Even though we tend to think of gain killings as something that happened in decades or even centuries gone by, the availability of firearms, and other weapons matched with the rise in bank robberies, mugging etc. leads us to think a new generation of serial killers is emerging. Power Seekers -It is very difficult to distinguish power oriented killers from the larger group of lust killers. However, even though domination is often to the same degree, power seekers tend to be aware of their behaviour and have been able to describe their symptoms while under investigation. The most famous example - though fictional is Hanabel Lector, who killed to be like god. |
